Raw sugar factory, refinery and electricity producer

Opened in 1889, today the factory supplies not just raw sugar made from sugar cane but also electrical energy.

As well as being the headquarters of Mackay Sugar Limited (MSL), the Racecourse raw sugar factory is one of the three factories owned by the company in which Nordzucker has a 70 per cent shareholding. All three factories are situated northwest of Mackay in the State of Queensland, Australia.

The raw sugar factory in Racecourse opened in 1889. It is located around 2 km west of Mackay in the State of Queensland, Australia. In 1991, a refinery was built with a partner beside the raw sugar factory. Raw sugar is refined there and sold under the leading Australian brand CSR. Our two factories in Marian and Farleigh also supply raw sugar to Racecourse for refining.

The sugar cane for the campaign grows in the area surrounding the factory and is transported from the fields to the factory using the factory’s own railway network.

In addition to raw sugar, we produce molasses and crushed sugar cane – bagasse – in Racecourse.

We use the bagasse to generate energy for the factory and market the surplus electrical energy produced. This involves supplying bagasse to Racecourse from our other two factories in Marian and Farleigh, provided it is not needed for those factory´s own energy consumption.
