GoGreen: Our path to climate-neutral production

Sustainability is an essential part of our corporate strategy. By 2030, we want to have our CO2 emissions compared to the years 2017 to 2019 and achieve climate-neutral production by 2050. Nordzucker has committed to this first step as part of the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi).

The decisive prerequisite is the technical transformation of our factories in order to reduce energy requirements in sugar production. The course for this has been set: We are developing customised investment plans for each European plant. For example, for our Danish plant in Nakskov: the evaporation station is the centrepiece of production, where the thin juice is heated and the water is removed from the sugar solution in several stages. In order to improve energy efficiency in this process, we replaced evaporators last year. The expansion to include additional evaporation stations will lead to further savings.

The second example is the Uelzen plant: We are currently building a new extraction tower here; it will form the basis for energy-efficient production and will go into operation for the 2024/2025 campaign. Two measures that show how we can reduce our energy consumption. In short: we are on the way to climate-neutral production.
