Nordzucker strengthens competitiveness: sugar production in Nakskov to be discontinued
Nordzucker has decided to cease sugar production at its Nakskov site in Denmark following the 2026/2027 campaign. In future, the site will continue to operate as a Service Center for sugar packaging. The decision forms part of ongoing measures to strengthen the company’s competitiveness and resilience in a European sugar market that remains challenging.
In recent years, Nordzucker has continuously developed its production network. Most recently, sugar production in Trenčianská Teplá, Slovakia and raw sugar refining in Porkkala, Finland, were discontinued at the start of 2026. The cessation of sugar production in Nakskov now marks another major step towards optimising the network. In future, sugar production in Denmark will be consolidated at the Nykøbing site, which will consequently operate at full capacity, whilst Nakskov will continue to operate as a service centre for sugar packaging. Further redistribution of production volumes within the Group will also ensure that the remaining plants are utilised more effectively.
“We are constantly working to strengthen our resilience and competitiveness as a company, thereby ensuring that we remain successful in a challenging and volatile market environment,” says Lars Gorissen, CEO of Nordzucker AG. “The decision regarding Nakskov was not an easy one for us. However, it is necessary to position Nordzucker as a strong, efficient and sustainable organisation in the long term. At the same time, we remain a reliable partner for our customers and will continue to supply the market to the accustomed extent.”
The necessary discussions with employee representatives and other relevant stakeholders have been concluded. The cessation of sugar production will affect 70 jobs. Together with the employee representatives, measures have been developed to provide the best possible support for the affected staff and to assist them in their career transition.
This measure forms part of the implementation of the Fields for Growth corporate strategy. A key component of the strategy is the continuous improvement of efficiency and competitiveness by adapting production capacities to changing market conditions. This is complemented by excellence initiatives and further measures to optimise costs across the Group.
