Step by step towards more climate-conscious production
Sugar production is energy-intensive: we need steam to extract the sugar from the beet and crystallize it. That is why we are continuously working together to reduce our CO₂ footprint in our own production. To achieve this, we rely on a combination of efficient energy use, modern technology, and the gradual expansion of renewable energies.
Clear goals, scientifically based
As part of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), we have committed to halving CO₂ emissions from our production (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030 compared to the base year 2018. This goal provides the framework for all measures in our plants.
GoGreen: Roadmaps for each plant
In order to systematically pursue our reduction targets and achieve them by 2030, we are grouping our activities in the GoGreen programme. Individual roadmaps have been developed for each of our European factories, defining concrete steps to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. The measures are tailored precisely to the conditions at each location and are being implemented and further developed step by step.
Increasing efficiency and changing the energy mix
A key lever is increasing energy efficiency – for example, through modern evaporation and heat recovery technologies. Parallel to this, we are pushing ahead with the transition of the energy mix, with renewable energies playing a key role in the long term. This includes, in particular, biogas, which can also be obtained from our beet pulp. In Denmark, our plants already supply a biogas plant with pressed pulp and in return purchase biomethane. In addition, we are examining further site-specific solutions – such as biomass, waste heat utilization, or partial electrification – always with a view to technical feasibility, economic efficiency, and regional conditions.
