CEO Lars Gorissen’s visit to Australia: growing with cane sugar
In April 2025, Nordzucker CEO Lars Gorissen travelled to Australia as part of his annual visit. Among other things, he took part in the Mackay Sugar Employee Forum. Carl Morton, CEO of Mackay Sugar Limited (MSL), and the Australian management team informed around 600 colleagues about the latest developments at MSL. In his speech, Lars Gorissen emphasised Nordzucker’s successful move to Australia: “Six years ago, we took the bold step of investing outside Europe and outside the sugar beet industry – in Mackay Sugar. The investment was an important milestone for Nordzucker’s growth at the time and remains so today. Thanks to the high level of dedications of everyone involved, the investment was a great success. This motivates us to continue growing in the cane business.”
A number of major maintenance and investment projects are currently underway at the three Mackay sites in Farleigh, Marian and Racecourse, which must be completed by the start of the crush in early June. For example, various evaporators and cooking equipment are being replaced or renewed. The Farleigh factory is also receiving two new diesel-electric hybrid locomotives and brake cars. These measures will ensure that the sites run more smoothly and reliably during the coming crush, which will strengthen the confidence of local growers and secure the financial success of the company.
Lars Gorissen visited all three sites and spoke with employees and managers on site. He was impressed by the high level of dedication shown by the employees there: “The dedication of our Australian colleagues is impressive. Their hard work and dedication are crucial to our joint success in the Australian cane sugar business.”
