Current field update: Sugar beet developing under changeable conditions
This year’s sugar beet development is taking place under highly variable weather conditions. A dry May and the prospect of a possible early summer drought initially led to a cautious assessment of the crops.
In July, periods of heavy rain significantly accelerated plant growth in many regions, particularly in Germany and Denmark.
Initial trial harvests showed positive development of plant mass in Germany. At the same time, various challenges were observed at the beginning of August: high temperatures, a two-week dry spell, above-average leaf disease pressure and, in Germany, the regional risk of the plant diseases SBR and Stolbur spreading.
It is not yet possible to make any statements about sugar content, as this can change significantly until the campaign, particularly due to the upcoming weather conditions. Therefore, statements about sugar content can only be made after the campaign has started.
