Sugar beet and sugar cane form the basis of our manufacturing processes. Their cultivation influences key environmental factors such as climate, soil, and water \u2013 and thus represents an important lever for our sustainability performance. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a key goal in this regard. As part of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), we have committed to significantly reducing emissions along the entire value chain. Specifically for cultivation-related emissions, we have set ourselves FLAG (F<\/strong>orest, L<\/strong>and and Ag<\/strong>riculture) targets, which aim for a 36 percent reduction by 2030 compared to the base year 2018. These targets provide the framework for our CO\u2082 reduction activities in beet cultivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Together with our farmers and partners from industry and research, we are testing specific measures to reduce CO\u2082 emissions in cultivation. One focus is on CO\u2082-reduced nitrogen fertilizer, which is produced using renewable energies. It has the same fertilizing effect as conventional products but enables a 10 to 15 percent reduction in CO\u2082 emissions in sugar beet cultivation. We are also testing CO\u2082 reduced potash fertilizers and alternative fuels such as HVO100. The projects are being gradually expanded and further developed through accompanying data collection. Other approaches \u2013 such as conservation tillage, intercropping, or more targeted variety selection \u2013 are currently being tested or analyzed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sustainable cultivation can only be achieved if we work together. That is why we rely on close communication with our growers and on solutions that are practical and suitable for different conditions.
