A PIONEER IN THE SUGAR INDUSTRY

We have been continuously improving our sustainability performance for decades. Whether it’s our utilization of resources, efficient energy and land usage or reducing and avoiding contaminants, our efforts are bearing fruit. This is reflected in our key indicators.

Emissions

CO₂ emissions Scope 1* and Scope 2*

Intensive total CO₂ emissions (per ton of sugar) trend from 2009-2021. Data from 2020 onwards include Mackay Sugar Ltd., Nordzucker‘s Australian subsidary.

* Scope 1: CO₂ emissions from Nordzucker‘s direct operations
* Scope 2: CO₂ emissions from Nordzucker‘s indirect purchased energy including electricity, steam and heat

CO₂ emissions Scope 1

Intensive total (per ton of sugar) Scope 1 CO₂ emissions trend from 2009-2021. Data from 2020 onwards include Mackay Sugar Ltd., Nordzucker‘s Australian subsidary.

CO₂ emissions Scope 2

Intensive total (per ton of sugar) Scope 2 CO₂ emissions trend from 2009-2021. Data from 2020 onwards include Mackay Sugar Ltd., Nordzucker‘s Australian subsidary.

Total other emissions

Total annual SO₂, NOx and dust discharge from 2009-2021. Data from 2020 onwards include Mackay Sugar Ltd., Nordzucker‘s Australian subsidary.

Energy – total and renewable

Intensive primary energy usage

Intensive primary energy (per ton of sugar) usage trend from 2009-2021. Data from 2020 onwards include Mackay Sugar Ltd., Nordzucker‘s Australian subsidary.

The reason for the significant increase of our energy consumption in 2020 is due to the acquisition of Mackay, with our new Australian sugar cane factories. Here, 95% of the use energy comes from renewable source, specifically bagasse. Due to the wide availability of this renewable energy with zero emissions that Mackay had access to, decreasing of energy consumption was previously not considered. However, this will be the focus over the next years.

Total purchased energy

Intensive (per ton of sugar) and absolute (total) purchased energy and absolute (total) purchased electricity from 2017-2021. Data from 2020 onwards include Mackay Sugar Ltd., Nordzucker‘s Australian subsidary.

Water

Intensive water consumption

Intensive (per ton of sugar) water consumption from 2010-2021. Data from 2020 onwards include Mackay Sugar Ltd., Nordzucker‘s Australian subsidary.

Intensive total treated water discharge

Intensive total treated water discharge (per ton of sugar) trend from 2010-2021. Data from 2020 onwards include Mackay Sugar Ltd., Nordzucker‘s Australian subsidary.

Product Carbon Footprint

A product carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions generated by a product. In our case, we calculate the climate impact created from seeding of the sugar beet to when the product is ready at our factory-gate. We undertake our PCF in cooperation with RISE, the Research Institutes of Sweden.

We provide Product Carbon Footprint data based on two different allocation methods. The so called “economic allocation”, is based on the sugar price and is the preferred method of our customers. On the other hand, we use “lower-heating value allocation”, which is recommended by the sugar industry, as it focuses on the energy density of the products.

… on lower-heating value allocation

Intensive (per kg of sugar) product carbon footprint based on lower-heating value allocation from 2017-2020.

… on economic value allocation

Intensive (per kg of sugar) product carbon footprint based on economic value allocation from 2017-2020.

Beet yield

Total beet yield in tons per hectare in every European country with operations from 2010-2021.

SAI FSA score

All our sugar beet growers participate in the Farmer Sustainability Assessment (FSA) by the Sustainability Assessment Initiative Platform (SAI), since 2015. These are our current third-party verified scores.

In Germany we use REDcert certification, due to the production of bioethanol in our factory Klein Wanzleben. Verification audits are carried out every year. The REDcert verification process has been benchmarked with silver level according to SAI.

All certificates can be found here.

Number of work accidents

Work accidents in Europe‘s operations from 2009-2021. Work accidents are defined as more than three days absence of work, due to an accident at the workplace.

Employee

Information about employees

Average amount and age* of employees as well as percentages of blue collar and employees covered by a collective agreement in Europe‘s operations from the 2015/16-20/21 financial years.

*Only permanent employees considered

Female employee representation

Percentage of female employee representation* and estimated total female employees based on the average total amount of employees in Europe from 2015/16-2020/21.

*Only permanent employees considered

Fact
Box
We have been reducing CO₂ emissions from our plants for many years. With the Go Green project we are going even further - and in the long term want to fully switch to renewable energies.
