Nykøbing sugar plant (Denmark)

The Nykøbing sugar plant was established in 1884 as a farmers' company. The plant lies in southern Denmark and is the only plant which processes sugar beet and is also capable of refining sugar. It can process 11,800 tonnes of sugar beet a day. The plant employs around 190 members of staff who are supported by another 50 temporary workers during the sugar beet campaign. The plant produces sugar, molasses and animal feed. Around half of the sugar produced here is sold by retailers under the Dansukker brand, whilst the other half is supplied to the further processing industry. It also produces specialities such as brown sugar and icing sugar. Liquid sugar and sugar for the non-food industry are mainly produced in Gørlev.
