Klein Wanzleben Bioethanol

Fuel 21 GmbH & Co. KG, Klein Wanzleben, merged with Nordzucker AG with effect from 1 March 2014. When fuel 21 GmbH & Co. KG was founded in summer 2006, Nordzucker AG opened up a new market as one of the leading European sugar producers. The European Union set itself a target of replacing 10 per cent of conventional fuels with bioenergy by 2020 with the aim of reducing the CO2 emissions in the transport sector, and decreasing the European Union’s dependency on imports of crude oil.

In 2007, Nordzucker built a bioethanol production plant in Klein Wanzleben / Sachsen-Anhalt with a capacity of 130,000 cubic metres per year. The advantages of this location were its position in the middle of a sugar beet cultivation area, the already existing logistics infrastructure, and the established Nordzucker AG sugar plant in the immediate vicinity. This enabled synergies to be harnessed for the benefit of logistics, processing the raw materials, energy supplies and human resources.

Bioenergy includes biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel. Bioethanol is the most widely used biofuel in the world and can be produced from a range of raw materials. Nordzucker produces bioethanol from domestic sugar beet and therefore opens up a new sustainable outlook for the Nordzucker AG beet farmers.
